Today’s tour
was another all day tour. First, we drove from the port approximately 1 ½ hours
to a town called Avignon. This medieval town was the home of 9 Popes during the
years 1309 – 1378 when they moved back to Rome. Here we toured the medieval
town seeing the Cathedral, the Palace of the Popes and the gardens. Afterwards
we were able to find a place for lunch and wander through the town. Once back
on our bus, we drove another 45 minutes to Le Pont du Gard – the bridge of the
river Gard.
This “bridge’
is a world famous ancient Roman aqueduct that used to carry approximately 44
million gallons of water daily along a distance of 30 miles from Uzes to Nimes.
This aqueduct is an absolute marvel in engineering. It has 3 levels, however
the water itself was carried along the uppermost level.
All of this
amazing beauty and more is found in Provence, a spectacularly beautiful area of
France which boasts fruit orchards, vineyards and olive groves. There are 2
olive trees at Le Pont du Gard which have to be more than 1,000 years old.
